The Sitka Conservation Society connects youth to the natural environment of the Tongass through hands-on experiential education and leadership opportunities through the Alaska Way of Life 4-H Project. The Alaska Way of Life 4-H Project is part of the Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H Club, and is supported in partnership by SCS with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service. We provide programming for youth ages 5 - 18. We are building future Alaskan leaders that will steward this place for generations to come.

This project focuses on teaching youth - through experiences - how to live reciprocally with the land and sea. Our learning-teaching model facilitates leadership development as youth learn skills from community members, then pass on those skills to their peers and families. With weekly programming, summer camps and regional exchanges, we recognize the need for youth programming in this community. Our programming is made possible by dedicated partner organizations and local adult volunteers with shared visions and invested time. We are so grateful to our partners helping us continue to grow and offer well-rounded experiences to Sitka youth that connect them to this place, community, and way of life.

The Alaska Way of Life 4-H programs reflect the seasonality of Southeast Alaska. We develop relevant seasonal programming based on what’s happening in the environment around us, youth interest and the skills of our volunteers and community partners. Programs have included hiking, wild edible harvesting, game processing, tide-pooling, and food preservation techniques such as jammaking, drying, and smoking. Additionally, we offer unique opportunities for overnight adventures out in the Tongass. 4-H members commit to learning together, sharing knowledge, and giving back to the community.
