Founded in 1967, SCS is the oldest conservation organization in Alaska. Our grassroots work is based in Sitka, Alaska, a small coastal town in the heart of the Tongass, the largest national forest in the United States.
Our Mission
SCS protects the natural environment of the Tongass National Forest while supporting the development of economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable communities within Southeast Alaska.

Living Wilderness Fund
The Living Wilderness Fund celebrates the lives of the people who care for the Tongass, its natural ecosystems, and the wilderness that it contains. It is a gift to future generations. The fund's contributors are committed to inspiring others to further protect this beautiful landscape. Thanks to their generous contributions, SCS continues to communicate the importance of wilderness to Sitka and Sitkans.
