Climate change is hitting Alaska. Hard.
The impacts are easy to see. Our glaciers are retreating, our Arctic sea ice is declining, our permafrost is melting and harming critical infrastructure in the northern part of the state, and our oceans are acidifying, threatening our fisheries. In fact, climate change is affecting Alaska more than any other state in the United States.
Scientists have confirmed these results. Over the last 50 years, winter temperatures across Alaska have risen by an average of 6.3°F, a staggering rate that is twice the national average over the same period of time. And it’s only going to get worse.
The next generation of Alaskans will have to shoulder an even greater burden. Whether it is today’s kindergartner who graduates from college in 2033, or today’s high school senior who may sit on the Alaska legislature when she is 33 in 2030, the challenges the next generation will face due to climate change will be immense.
As chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) is one of the most powerful people in the world when it comes to implementing climate change solutions. She has the power to catalyze renewable energy investments and phase out fossil fuel developments that accelerate climate change. Senator Murkowski represents the next generation of Alaskans and has an obligation to leave them a renewable energy future.
Please sign this petition to tell Senator Murkowski to take concrete steps toward addressing climate change in her new role as Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
