Project: Deer Habitat Restoration – Vaccinium Mapping
Dates: Fall/Winter 2011
Summary: The project goal is to identify potential locations for creating artificial canopy gaps – a wildlife habitat restoration technique – in young growth forests. We mapped occurences of Vaccinium and other winter forage plants that are critical to overwintering survival of Sitka Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis)
Partners: Sitka Conservation Society, USFS Sitka Ranger District, Sitka High School
Funding: SCS, Secure Rural Schools Act Title II

Raw Data (.csv) This is a tab-delimited file that can be opened in Excel or Google Fusion Tables. This table is the tabulated raw data for all the information collected at each occurence of Vaccinium.
Google Earth Tour (kmz) This is probably the easiest way to visually look at the data. You need to have Google Earth installed on your computer (it’s free). Open this file in Google Earth and the sub-folders to see the all mapping records, student recommendations, and a tour. Click on a record to see all the data recorded at a particular site.
ArcGIS shapefile (WGS84) This is a vector shapefile (point) to use in ArcGIS. It includes all data for each mapping record.
