GIS Mapping
GIS = Geographic Information SystemGIS

What is GIS? GIS helps us to layer different kinds of information on a map, much as paper maps can use clear plastic mylar overlays. Each layer (or theme) presents a unique kind of information, such as roads, land ownership, streams or forest cover. These layers allow us to make important comparisons and run spatial analyses in our conservation work.

Sitka Conservation Society and GIS

We are one of the only grassroots conservation organizations in Alaska that runs a GIS program. Our GIS program goal is to facilitate public understanding of land management, ecology, and land use patterns over time.

SCS first obtained Geographic Information System capability in 1995. Many thanks to ESRI and the Society for Conservation GIS for supporting our GIS program.

Although SCS has a mountain of GIS data on hand we generally do not have the resources to respond to individual data requests. Most of our GIS resources are dedicated to producing maps that SCS and our partners use in public outreach and in providing feedback to the USFS during the various stages of the NEPA planning process.

For general GIS data requests, we have put together a Tongass GIS sampler that includes a smorgasbord of biological and social data layers. Both an ArcGIS .mxd file and an ArcReader file have been provided for your use. The files are included in ZIP format and the file size is about 250 megabytes so is suitable for broadband users only.

Please contact the US Forest Service and Alaska Department of Fish & Game for your other Tongass GIS data needs.
